5G services to be launched soon: Minister Gurung

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Parbat Gurung has shared that preparation was afoot to launch 5G services at the earliest in the country.

At a discourse organized by the Tekpana Media here on Monday, Minister Gurung shared that the service would be soon tested and launched as a decision in this regard had already been made. Gurung, also spokesperson for the government, said that the National Frequency Policy was being formulated to address the issues regarding radio frequency in the country.

The government was at work for the development of the telecommunications sector and for ensuring reforms at policy level to further strengthen the telecommunication sector, he stated. The Minister viewed that it was imperative to regulate anomalies prevailing in the telecommunication sector in the country such as duplication and leakage of revenue among others.

Furthermore, he shared the Telecommunications Act-2053 BS would be amended and a new one would be introduced in lieu of the archaic Telecommunications Act-2053 BS. On the occasion, Shovakanta Poudel of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology shared that necessary physical infrastructures were built for the expansion of the internet services. He informed that the Electronic Transactions Act- 2008 would be amended soon.

Likewise, Nepal Telecommunications Authority Chairperson Purushottam Khanal said that the internet service was expanded in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Director at the Nepal Telecom Pratibha Baidhya spoke of the need to ensure access of telecommunication services in all the remote parts of the country.
